A staggering 1.9 million vouchers sent out through the government’s flagship Energy Bills Support Scheme have not yet been claimed.

The energy vouchers, which are being issued for prepayment meter (PPM) customers, are only valid for 90 days.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has today released data which reveals that January had the highest rate of energy support reach.

According to new figures, 1.7 million vouchers were used by households with PPMs across Britain in January, an estimated 130,000 more than in December.

Energy suppliers with the highest rates of voucher redemptions include Octopus and E Gas & Electricity while the five energy companies with the largest number of PPM customers, British Gas, E.ON, OVO, EDF and ScottishPower have increased the number of voucher redemptions, the government has said.

Energy Security Secretary Grant Shapps said: “The help we’ve put in place means we are covering around half of most household’s energy bill this winter – this is an unprecedented level of support.

“With January temperatures having dropped to as low as -10°C in some parts of the country, I am pleased to announce today a record number of households taking up the government support.

“But many households are yet to redeem the vouchers they are entitled to and I want energy companies to redouble their efforts to get the support to those who need it.”
